Star anise is a tree or shrub whose fruits serve as a spice. Originally from southern China and Vietnam, it is now also grown in Cambodia, Laos, Japan and the Philippines. Rheum officinale, also known as Chinese rhubarb or Russian rhubarb, belongs to the knotweed family (Polygonaceae).
