Russian / Chinese Rhubarb - Rheum palmatum / Rheum officinalis

Rheum officinale, also known as Chinese rhubarb or Russian rhubarb, belongs to the knotweed family (Polygonaceae). This plant is native to mountainous areas in western and northwestern China, India, Tibet, Russia and Turkey. The plant grows at altitudes between 1200 and 4000 meters and can reach an impressive height of 1.5 to 2 meters.

Characteristics and use

The stems of Rheum officinale are often used as food, similar to other types of rhubarb. The leaves, on the other hand, contain high concentrations of oxalic acid, which can be toxic. Oxalic acid can precipitate in the renal tubules, which can lead to kidney failure.

The roots of the plant are valued in traditional Chinese medicine and are known there as yào yòng dà huáng (药用大黄). They are considered one of the most widely used herbs in Chinese folk medicine.

Ingredients

The main active ingredients in the roots are:

Hydroxyanthracenes, including anthraquinones

Tannins

They also contain calcium oxalate, fatty acids, resins, starch, stilbene glycosides and traces of essential oils.

Uses

The rhizome of Rheum officinale is harvested from plants that are at least six years old. Harvesting takes place in autumn or early spring. The roots are cut into small cubes, dried and sometimes stir-fried or steamed with alcohol to preserve their medicinal properties.

Laxative and Astringent Effects

The anthraquinones in the roots have a laxative effect. At the same time, tannins and bitter substances (4-11%) provide an opposite astringent (constipating) effect.

At low doses, the tannins dominate, resulting in an antidiarrheal effect.

At higher doses, the anthraquinones predominate, which have a strong laxative effect.

Heating can affect the stability of anthraquinones, which reduces the laxative effect. Therefore, the method of preparation can affect the effect of the roots.

Dosage

A usual dosage varies from 1 to 3 grams per day, depending on the application. This can be prepared as a tea (decoction) or taken directly.

Important Precautions

Do not use the roots for more than 8 days in a row.

Avoid use in children under 12 years of age, pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding.

Therapist

A therapist is a professional who deals with the treatment of physical or mental illness as a profession. There are countless specializations within this broad field, each with their own treatment methods. Some examples are physiotherapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, homeopaths, kinesiologists, osteopaths, mental coaches and hypnotherapists. An important aspect of the therapy is the orthomolecular treatment method, in which nutrition and supportive supplementation play a role.

In contrast to symptom management, the focus of therapy is often on addressing the underlying causes of disorders and promoting preventive health. All aspects that influence health are taken into consideration, such as diet, stress management, exercise and emotional state.

Each client receives a personal treatment plan that is developed by the therapist. This plan is drawn up on the basis of consultations, questionnaires and food diaries to gain an in-depth insight into the client's lifestyle. In addition, various tests and examinations can be performed to determine the balance in the body.

Cooperation
