Cats love catnip, especially Nepeta cataria, better known as 'catnip'. This plant contains several essential oils, including nepetalactone, which has a mild hallucinogenic effect. This effect occurs when the substance is inhaled and irritates the vomeronasal organ. Cats each respond to catnip in their own way. Some roll on the ground meowing or whining, bump into the plant or remain motionless with a blurry look in their eyes, sometimes with the nictitating membrane partially closed. Drooling and purring are also common reactions. The effect disappears after ten to fifteen minutes. Not all cats respond to catnip and the response is genetically determined. About 80% of cats show the reactions described earlier.
